The castle was built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the region by the will of Arnold VI - the lord of Sierck in 1419 and completed in 1434, when the castle was declared able to withstand a siege, and made to serve the electorate of Trier. It overlooks the village of Manderen.
Its name comes from John Churchill Duke of Marlborough, immortalized in popular song Marlbrough Goes to War. The latter briefly installed his headquarters on June 3, 1705 during the War of Spanish Succession before losing out to Trier two weeks later.
It was sold as a national property in 1793 but suffered the ravages of time and various lootings. Despite being a historical monument since 1930, it was ruined when purchased by the General Council of Moselle in 1975 from the Weiter family, the castle was fully rehabilitated or rebuilt, 1991 to September 1999.
The castle has four towers connected by railings and a main building on three floors, and a large central courtyard.

Belonging to network Great Sites of Moselle, the Malbrouck castle offers a dynamic exhibition tracing five centuries of history through the scenery, amazing imagery and models. Medieval banquets and performances are held regularly within its walls.
Situated in close proximity to Luxembourg and Germany, the castle is a place of exhibition resolutely transborder.

The Malbrouck Castle, located in close proximity to the borders with Luxembourg and Germany, is a major tourist center and is on the list of attractions of Moselle (French: Grands sites de Moselle).
